| In the Mid-1960's, the Illinois Central
experimented with GE products. Six of these were U30B's, numbered
5000-5, arriving in March of 1967. Tail-end Charlie was chosen as
the first IC diesel to get the new ICG solid orange. It stayed in
this scheme until it was returned to the lessor, Central States
Equipment on March 1st, 1982. They sold it to the Iowa Railroad in
June of 1982,
becoming IIRC 25 and quickly getting repainted into a solid yellow
scheme. Despite being a bright yellow, it was involved in a
grade crossing accident at Malcolm, Iowa on October 26th, 1982. It
was sold for scrap in
1988.
Notes: The sills on this unit were definitely repainted at some point. This was also one of maybe two times that this scheme was painted at the Woodcrest Shops. Several of these photos are obviously right after it rolled out of Woodcrest. The bright orange with a mint green background really bites. Perhaps this led railroad officials down the path of disliking the scheme. Date in Solid Orange: July/August 1978 - 1982 |
